Twister Store: Connecting Attraction Experience to Retail Performance
The Business Challenge
Following the Twister attraction, a continuous flow of guests entered the retail environment seeking merchandise that would extend their connection to the movie and attraction experience.
With trains unloading approximately every 15 minutes, the store needed to deliver an exciting, well-merchandised presentation while maintaining product availability and visual standards during repeated surges in customer traffic.
I was contracted to lead a creative team in developing and rolling out visual merchandising strategies across the park's retail venues. The Twister Store presented a unique opportunity to connect attraction storytelling with a high-volume retail environment.
The Strategy
With a very creative team of designers and visual merchandisers, I approached the project as an integrated retail experience, bringing together store planning, fixture design, lighting, sound, product presentation, and merchandising operations to create a cohesive environment that reinforced the attraction's identity.
Translating the Attraction into a Retail Experience
I coordinated the elements of the store environment, including wall and floor fixtures, ceiling treatments, lighting, sound, music, and merchandise presentation, to create a unified experience that extended the attraction's storytelling into the retail space.
Designing for High-Volume Customer Flow
The merchandising strategy accounted for the recurring influx of guests after each ride cycle. Product placement, fixture organization, and backroom accessibility were planned to support an engaging presentation while allowing merchandise to be replenished efficiently between guest surges.
Creating a Repeatable Merchandising and Training System
Beyond the store design, I developed a comprehensive training program and operating system for the merchandising team. Each fixture received a unique identification number, with corresponding backroom stock organization to simplify product retrieval and replenishment.
The program established clear merchandising standards and trained team members to refresh and re-merchandise the store at 15-minute intervals, helping maintain presentation quality during continuous operations.
Results & Operational Impact
The project introduced a systematic approach to retail presentation and replenishment that improved upon previous merchandising practices.
-
15-minute merchandising cycle: Established a structured process for refreshing the store between attraction unloads.
-
Standardized operating procedures: Introduced fixture identification, organized backroom inventory, and clear merchandising standards.
-
Team training and consistency: Developed a repeatable training system to support reliable execution.
-
Park-wide application: The systematic re-merchandising approach became a standard across multiple retail locations within the park.
Leadership Perspective
The Twister Store project demonstrates my ability to connect experiential storytelling, retail design, and operational execution. By integrating the physical environment with a structured merchandising and replenishment system, I helped create a retail model designed to sustain the guest experience while meeting the demands of a high-volume entertainment destination.
